7 tips and things to think about on painting your window trim
1. Do a sponge layer on top to get rid of the brush strokes
Pretty self-explanatory. I used a mini-roller like this one to get the job done, and in the corners used this foam paint brush.
Also these are the new roman shades we got! The color is Barcelona Dunes.
2. Look at it in multiple lights before deciding it’s done
If you are a perfectionist, this step is a must! You will drive yourself crazy after you’re done with touch ups. Just take it slow and look at it in daylight and nighttime to touch it all up before calling it quits.
3. It will peel over time. But there are ways to prolong it.
Sadly, latex paint just wasn’t meant to adhere to vinyl. But it doesn’t mean the project isn’t worth it! The happiness that changing the color of our windows has brought me is sooo worth touching up some areas every couple years.
To prolong the peeling, sand it a little bit with a super fine grit sand paper, and prime it before painting. Make sure to use a durable paint to prolong the peeling. I like Behr Premium Plus Ultra for everything.
4. Score off the tape before peeling it off
Remember what I said about paint not adhering to vinyl well? Well the tape sometimes peels it off, too! Make sure to score the tape off with a razor blade before you peel it.
5. Take the windows off completely, but don’t paint part of the track!
Taking the windows off makes things so much easier and allows you to get every inch of it. But don’t paint the crevices of the track or else the windows will be pretty tough to open and close because it will stick. You don’t see the track much anyway 🙂
6. Be patient!
It’s OK if your house is in shambles or a while…make sure you get it very detailed and everything is completely dry before reinstalling the windows.
7. HAVE FUN!
