Mixing Traditional with Modern: Our Guest Bathroom Before & After Reveal
It’s been a long road to get our house to where we want it to be – from ripping out walls and flooring, to now adding the finishing touches. Our guest bathroom was the LAST room in the house we started on and the first to be completed. Scroll for before and after photos and sources of everything we used!
Before:
So, the “before” wasn’t that bad. It was actually pretty updated with exception of the vanity. However since we only have two bathrooms and we converted our master tub into a double-head shower, we didn’t have a tub in our house! We want to be here for another 5-7 years which means we will probably have a baby or two (three?!) here and a tub is a must for that.
After:
The whole look I went for was pretty traditional, with hints of modern and rustic.
The Bones: (tile, paint, vanity, lighting, mirror, tub):
The vanity I got from The Classy Home during their Memorial Day sale (it didn’t come until their Labor Day sale, LOL).
All tile is from Floor & Decor. I love using them because they are just so easy to work with and most of the time have the best prices, so you don’t have to shop around much.
The floor tile, I definitely wanted very traditional. I wanted a kind of “late 1800’s/early 1900’s New York City powder room” vibe. So I went with the charcoal grout to grunge it up a bit. Click here for the tile we used.
With the shower, I still wanted to continue the traditional NYC bathroom feel but add a little modern to it, so I chose the long subway tiles with sanded grout, and these black hexagon tiles for the back. I had been seeing the two-tone tile baths everywhere on Pinterest and I just had to go with!
The tub I kept more modern lines, making sure to not date the bathroom. I did think about claw-foot, but the bathroom is a little too small for wrap-around curtains, and I wanted the back shower wall to be the biggest feature!
With the mirror and lighting,I also tried to stay true to the them with some more traditional fixtures. I went with this Pottery Barn mirror and this super inexpensive light fixture!
The Fixtures:
These I also wanted to incorporate modern with traditional. Since the bones were mostly traditional, I decided that the main fixtures should be the more modern ones. Then I used these Magnolia Home towel hooks from Target and a matching toilet paper roll holder to incorporate the traditional.
The Accessories:
Finishing touches make the room! Shop my towels and hand soap below. I have also since added a shower curtain. I toyed with the idea of a more boho curtain that you can see below but felt like it would be too much, so I ended up using one layer of a waterproof curtain, and one regular IKEA Lenda curtain. You can find it all below!
