If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’ve been following my adventures in Hawaii and seeing how many opportunities there are here to stay fit! I am constantly on a wellness journey, and always look for different ways to stay active wherever I go. Keeping my activity and meals logged also helps me stay on track when I’m traveling and everything is crazy. I use ‘healthy choices’ section on the Walgreens Balance Rewards app so that I can log everything to earn Walgreens rewards. I love this app because you can log how you are living a healthy lifestyle, not just your meals and exercise! Plus, you earn Walgreens rewards for it…double whammy. Here are the different things I’ve found to stay active during my stay in Hawaii!
This is my favorite hike on O’ahu! Lanikai Pillboxes in Kailua is short and steep, and has panoramic views of the mountains and beaches. It took me only 20 minutes to get up the hill, but I sat up there for about 30 minutes just staring at God’s masterpiece in awe. I highly recommend this hike for a short and sweet (but super sweaty) workout…the beaches below are also handy for cooling off.
I bring these everywhere…even vacation! They’re a good quick snack to replenish what you lost during your workout, and are small and light to carry around.
The infamous diamond head…super crowded, but necessary to go to when you’re on O’ahu. The workout is amazing…there are 200 total stairs throughout the hike, with the biggest stretch being this long guy of 99 stairs that is pictured. This hike also has panoramic views of the mountains, beaches, and all of Waikiki. It took me about 40 minutes up (it would’ve been much shorter if I didn’t have to pass a ton of people), and I only stayed up there for about 5-10 minutes due to the abundance of tourists. It’s definitely not the place you go to relax, but it’s a great workout!
My favorite workout is anything in the water. I always say that God should’ve made me a mermaid instead of a human…I love being in the ocean. Paddle boarding is the best for both working out and relaxation. There is something about being out there alone on a paddle board that is so serene and relaxing. I would paddle against the current all the way down the beach, then just stand or sit on the board and let the current take me back while I soak up the sunshine…then repeat the process. The first few times you go are a big leg/shoulder/ab workout, but you get used to it after a while and it becomes easy. I like to challenge myself by going faster and longer.
Finally, hunting! My dad has land up in the mountains and hunts pigs for sport. The pig population is a big problem in Hawaii, and hunting them is heavily encouraged! Hunting is such an adrenaline rush, and there is a lot of walking/running (and waiting) involved. The wild hogs are so lean because they have to travel long distances to find food and water. They aren’t like the pigs on the mainland that are fattened up with slop and such. We smoked the pig and it was so yummy…it tasted like a healthy hot dog because there was basically no fat in it!
I hope you’ve enjoyed my active adventures during my trip!! Stay tuned for more posts soon (they may or may not involve ootd’s and food reviews).
I love staying fit by being active in the water! It’s such a great way to stay cool while exercising and doesn’t really feel like you’re trying to exercise – it’s just fun! #client
